As a someone who has spent a considerable amount of my teens and twenties binge drinking, the Hello Sunday Morning campaign certainly resonates with me.

Many of my Sunday mornings (and Saturday mornings for that matter) were spent hungover and unable to function. I’m not sure what the turning point was for me, but having two children has certainly changed my attitude towards drinking. For starters, hangovers and small children definitely do not mix!  I also want to set a good example for them so that they have a good relationship with alcohol when they are older.

I’ve also learnt that life really is too short and we should enjoy it while we can. Enjoying life is not lying on the couch feeling sorry for myself while my head throbs and my mouth feels like I’ve licked the bottom of a bird’s cage.

Australia has a drinking culture so entrenched within our psyche, that those who don’t drink are often ostracized for being ‘un-Australian’. The cost of alcohol related crime and alcohol related health problems in Australia is astronomical. I don’t want to be a part of that culture and I don’t want my daughters to feel like they have to drink to excess. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a drink, but not to excess. Not anymore.

This campaign encourages people to give up drinking for a period of time and tell the world about it. It has a growing community via Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo. The Facebook page has over 10,000 likes. This article talks about how the movement was started by Chris Raine when he was just 22.

Hello Sunday Morning is about learning to embrace the weekends without struggling through a revolting hangover. It’s about being fit and healthy and the best person you can possibly be. I love the positive message of this campaign. I love the online engagement. I might even try it myself.
